Further, the people of the State are known to be a frequently travelled populace in comparison to people hailing from other States. Given the availability of natural resources and a travel-friendly native population, it is imperative to boost tourism growth to develop Gujarat as a world-class destination. It is well-recognised that poor supporting infrastructure is a key deterrent to tourism. To address these lacunae, an attention is being given by the state to back-up tourism infrastructure. A few initiatives have thus been taken. These comprise projects under the aegis of Government of India (GoI) assistance schemes and high profile promotional events for festivals such as "Navratri". Gujarat has been marketed and promoted as a destination by various state efforts. The private sector network of hoteliers, travel agents and travel industry professionals which are the opinion makers in the travel industry are expected to demonstrated interest in marketing the state to outsiders.

Sector goals

The vision for tourism sector presented in the Blueprint for Infrastructure in Gujarat (BIG) 2020 report has been presented as follows:

  • Development of tourist circuits through niche and regional tourism genres to attract local, national and international tourists to Gujarat

  • Development of world class tourism destinations in Gujarat in a integrated manner to provide options to the discerning tourist, to attract investments and generate employment for local people

  • Facilitate smooth implementation and operations of tourism projects by facilitating initiatives in the area of land, human resources development, marketing and promotion and environment improvement.
