Over the last 40 years, GIDC has played a pioneering role in provision of industrial infrastructure to the prospective industries. Currently, it has 248 sanctioned estates, out of which 182 are currently functional. The details of the land acquired, developed and allotted in various districts / estates of Gujarat is available in the section on Details of existing Industrial Estates.
Although the largest number of estates exists in the Saurashtra and Kachchh region, the area under GIDC estates is largest in South Gujarat. There is a large difference in the average size of estates across regions. Predominantly, the GIDC estates cater to the engineering sector and only 15 estates have been specified solely for the chemical sector. Other specialised estates include one in electronics and two in ceramics. The details are presented below :

Salient Points Related to SEZs in Gujarat
Kandla SEZ: Salient Points
- Asia’s first (set up in early 60s) and India’s largest multi-product Special Economic Zone
- Kandla was started as a Free Trade Zone and later converted into SEZ
- 700 acres of land area. KASEZ is located just 9 Km away from modern-all-weather port of Kandla
- Initially Kandla Free Trade Zone catered to the Russian market. After the Russian crisis, the units became sick. However, in recent times, the activity has picked up in the zone. Currently, More than 115 operational units, the zone employ more than 15,000 persons
- Additional land acquisition is being contemplated
Surat SEZ: Salient Points
- Surat Special Economic Zone (SurSEZ)- country's first and only private sector SEZ set up by Diamond & Gem Development Corporation (DGDC
- Located in the centre of highly industrialized belt stretching from Ahmedabad to Vapi
- It was converted from a Export Processing Zone (EPZ) into a SEZ
- Expansion of the zone is difficult. This is so due to limited area available (physical constraints) and units already occupying the Zone.
