BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM (BRTS) STUDIES
As the above Rail based systems works on a guided track it cannot cater to the masses from all the corners of the city. Hence, GoG with a view to cater the diverse areas of the city has taken an initiative to develop two type of Urban Bus Transport System viz. a) Bus rapid Transit System b) Bus feeder system. To start with, 50 kms of route is being considered under BRTS with varying lane exclusivity, depending upon the availability of ROW. It is planned to run Medium to High Capacity Buses through private operators on BRTS corridors. The techno economic feasibility study for Bus Rapid Transit System was initiated by GIDB in 2005. The consultant has to conduct detailed techno economic feasibility of the BRT System including structuring and packaging for Private Sector Participation (PSP) and financial assistance required, if any. In the later stage, the project is implementing by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) through JNNURM Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) and state government funding. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) formed for implementing the BRT project in Ahmedabad City. The phase 1 of the project is under implementation.
Current Status
As these initiatives have been taken for Ahmedabad, same initiatives are under consideration of GoG as well as GoI for other major cities of Gujarat such as Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, etc as per the scale of the project and requirements of the city.
